Safeguarding at Kanga

Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility

At Kanga, keeping children safe is our highest priority.

Whether a child joins us at breakfast club, after school club, holiday camp, or any of our sports sessions, we want them to feel happy, safe, and supported from the moment they arrive.

Safeguarding is part of everything we do. Every member of the Kanga team has a responsibility to help create a safe, welcoming environment where children are listened to, respected and encouraged to be the very best they can be physically, mentally, and socially. Our policy covers all children, young people, and vulnerable adults accessing Kanga services.

Our approach to safeguarding

Safeguarding is about more than responding when something goes wrong. It is about creating an environment where children feel safe, noticing when something may not be right and taking action when needed.

We work with children, families, schools, and other professionals to support children’s safety and wellbeing.

We take all concerns seriously and expect everyone working at Kanga to play their part in keeping children safe.

When we work within a school-led provision, our team also follows the safeguarding procedures of that school or trust.

How we keep children safe

We have clear procedures in place across our services to help keep every child safe.

This includes:

  • A dedicated Safeguarding Team

  • Robust safer recruitment and ongoing suitability procedures, including appropriate DBS checks

  • Safeguarding training as part of staff induction, with regular updates and ongoing professional development

  • Clear procedures for reporting and recording concerns

  • Appropriate staff-to-child ratios

  • Risk assessments for our activities and settings

  • First aid trained staff

  • Safe sign-in and collection procedures

  • Clear behaviour expectations that promote a safe and respectful environment

  • Online safety awareness

  • Prevent Duty awareness

Our safeguarding procedures are regularly reviewed so that we can continue to provide safe, professional and enjoyable experiences for children.

Listening to children

Children should feel that they have someone they can talk to and that they will be listened to.

Our team works hard to build positive relationships with children so they feel comfortable speaking to us if they are worried, upset, or something doesn’t feel right.

We encourage children to share their thoughts and feelings, and our staff are trained to recognise when a child may need some extra support.

If a child tells us something that causes concern for their safety or wellbeing, we will listen, take them seriously and follow our safeguarding procedures.

If we’re worried about a child

Sometimes a child may tell us something, or a member of our team may notice something that causes concern about a child’s safety or wellbeing.

Our staff are trained to notice, respond, record, and report safeguarding concerns. Our Safeguarding Team will then consider what further action or referral may be needed.

There may be circumstances where it is not appropriate to speak to a parent or carer before seeking safeguarding advice.

Our priority will always be the safety and wellbeing of the child.

Working together with families

Safeguarding works best when we work together.

Parents and carers can help us keep children safe by:

  • Keeping emergency contacts and collection information up to date

  • Telling us about medical conditions, allergies, or additional needs

  • Sharing information that may affect their child’s wellbeing or experience at Kanga

  • Letting us know about any changes we need to be aware of

  • Speaking to us if they have a worry or concern

You know your child best. If there’s something you think would help us support them, please talk to us.

Worried about a child?

If you are worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child at Kanga, please speak to a member of our Safeguarding Team.

You don’t need to be certain that something is wrong before raising a concern. If something has worried you, please tell us.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

If you need safeguarding support when Kanga is unavailable, you can also contact the Children’s Social Care service for your local authority.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility

Keeping children safe is something we all share responsibility for.

By listening to children, working closely with families and schools, and making sure our team knows how to recognise and respond to concerns, we can create an environment where children feel safe, supported and ready to enjoy everything Kanga has to offer.

Safe. Supported. Ready to thrive.
